The Reading Head

Reviewing the latest books from our favourite authors.

Feast of Fates - Christian A. Brown

Feast of Fates is so much more than just a fantasy book, and with it's writing harping back to the old style. If that's  you're thing then you will enjoy this, Sadly for me, it isn't. The book is slow paced, to the point of rambling at times, making for confusion.

Although Morigan is a great character, I found it difficult at times to know what was going on. The location descriptions tended to be sparse if there at all, so I was unable to place myself in Morigan's shoes. If you regularly read my reviews, you will know that's a major issue for me.

I hate giving this such a low rating, especially as many others disagree with me, and thoroughly enjoyed the book. I can only offer my personal view. I would love to hear if you enjoy it and why, so why not leave me a comment?

In the meantime, here's a trailer and enjoy.

Traffic Jam - Melissa Groeling

Traffic Jam is a well paced story, The story is not only believable, but educational. As we read and get engrossed we will learn about Family, Loss and Trust, all very important topics for as all.

Sam is the main character, she is introduced and developed extremely well. I found myself getting right behind her, and feeling her shyness, fear and what ever. The book is full of some interesting surprises and changes throughout, making it a book you wouldn't want to put down. If you love a mystery, you'll love Traffic Jam. Watch for the end, it's not what you might think.

Awesome book, Awesome Story. Whatever your age, I highly recommend this offering from Melissa. I'm looking forward to seeing more from her. Enjoy.

SPOILER ALERT!

The Pleasure Principle

The Pleasure Principle - Kimberly Adkins The Pleasure Principle is by far the first book I have read, not just in this genre, but from this author. But I can promise you it will NOT be the last. If you enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey you will enjoy this.

Sexy throughout, making for a happy reprieve from a not so sexy marriage. The characters are all well developed and believable, making for an eye-opening read. Well for me at least. I could well believe a quiet, withdrawn character having a secret crush on her boss. Heck there must be loads of such people in the world. So I got very nervous when Alice got ready and walked into the club, and getting swept of her feet by not just one hunk but two, well that had the heart rate souring.

The book is well paced, keeping you eager to turn the page, so don’t plan an early night. And the ending, priceless!!

This is a book for adults, but whoever you are, this will be one ride you won’t want to get off. Enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT!

Trust

Trust - L. Chapman Trust is a very quick read, I read it in just a couple of hours. It is very slow paced though, which make it tedious to me. I felt like I was reading a commentary rather than a story though, which I didn’t like. Believable? nope not at all.

Ok so that’s the bad stuff, what did I like about the book? Hmm, I have to admit I’m struggling on this. The characters where good, although I didn’t find the story at all believable, I was nevertheless, able to identify with them and imagine their feelings.

I didn’t like this, I think that’s plain, but that’s my opinion, others – including you – may enjoy it. So as I always say – enjoy.

The Designed

The Designed - Kate Tailor The Designed is a great little Sci Fi, that is hard to put down. The book is fast paced, with plenty of action and excitement throughout. I'd say any one, male or female, will find something they enjoy when they read it.

The main characters where very shallow, so we never really had a chance to get to know them. For me that spoiled things a little as I like to be able to imagine myself in a story and that was impossible in The Designed. However, I was able to imagine some of Raleigh's decisions and her fear for Rho, to the extent that I shouted at her once or twice. She's a very fast decision maker, too fast I'd say.

There where times when the author engaged in some head-hopping, which did cause some confusion as I lost track on who was saying or doing what, but hey that happens in life, so no real biggy.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next. So whoever you are, take a look at The Designed and see what you think. Enjoy!

NB: I received a copy of this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Sarai's Fortune

Sarai's Fortune - Abigail Owen This is one fast paced story that you most definitely will not want to put down. The second in Abigail’s Shadowcat Nation, having not previously read book 1, I was still able to connect with the characters and the story line. Others suggest that book 1 should be read first, however, as the story’s run straight on and there’s more character development.

I thoroughly enjoyed the originality of the shifter world, it was fascinating to imagine a whole different world and how it would fit with you and me. There are some explicit and violent scenes throughout the book, so I’d keep it away from the kids for the time being.

The characters are fairly well developed through out and so it was easy to connect with Sara and her relationship with Zac and George, really have to feel for George poor guy. Lots of twists and surprises will keep you hooked.

You’ll love this if your an adult. Enjoy

The Fraternity of the Soul Eater

The Fraternity of the Soul Eater - Scott A. Lerner The Fraternity of the Soul Eaters is the third of Scott's Samuel Roberts Thriller Series, and having not read books one and two I am confident in saying that this reads perfectly well alone.

I found the story a little intriguing, as a Brit, I know very little about the Fraternity's in America, I don't believe we have them over here. Anyway, it was interesting to see how they guide a person's life beyond College. I found the story line a little far-fetched, but hey we can't have it all. Women ritually murdered in a pyramid built under a college campus, yeah whatever, like I said far-fetched.

I did enjoy the characters though, who were all very well introduced and built. Sam is a guy many of us girls would love to meet, well until they realise that he's married to his job that is.

The Story has plenty of twists, and surprises making for a very exciting read for anyone. Enjoy

Desires Detective

Desires Detective - Manuela Cardiga, Desiree Cronson At just 96 pages, Desire’s Detective packs a punch. Described as Historical Romance, this book has much more. From some intencianelly wrong French history, to errotica, mystery and suspence, what more can a girl ask?

A believable story line and characters would be good. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I was turned of by all the sex, sex, and more sex. Not a page goes by without at least one sexual act or induendo, sadly I don’t think many of us are quiet that lucky. I think if the book had been much longer I would have put it down and given a much lower rating.

So yeah, if you’re looking for a steamy sexual reading experience, then this is for you. Enjoy

Choices

Choices - J.L. McFadden As the review from The Telegraph states although Choices is a part of a series, it stands alone remarkably well. This is helpful for me as I hadn’t read the previous books, but I was able to pick up the story easily.

The love relationship between Adela, John and Gala, along with Adela’s wish to protect Gala, makes for some very exciting passages throughout. The story is well paced, neither to slow or to fast, and paints such clear pictures that it is very easy to imagine the story to be real.

I loved the way the characters were portrayed, we had just enough information to be able to believe they are real. This meant for some intense feelings throughout.

A love story or a mystery? I’ll let you decide …. Enjoy

Pilgrim

Pilgrim - Terrence Atwood Pilgrim was a quicky read at just 147 pages, but it sure comes with one almighty Bang! I was getting excited and scared, sometimes simultaneously, and shouting at the characters to run. Well you know me by now, I always shout at books if they get me excited! If you where chased by Pilgrim, which is hell bent on killing you, wouldn’t you get excited or should I say frightened and run??

So anyway, Pilgrim is extremely fast paced, so you feel the excitement that much more, but not so fast that you can’t follow the story. As scary as it is, the story is believable, Terrence has really portrayed the environment very well indeed.

Of the characters, my favourite has to be Catherine, not only was she believable, you are able to identify with her. She is one clever, strong woman.

Anyway’s enjoy the story, you’ll love it I’m sure.

India Was One

India Was One - An Indian If I’m honest I didn’t really expect to enjoy India Was One, as I have previously read a book from this area and couldn’t get my head around it. Thank fully that expectation didn’t come to fruition. India was One is a story based in India, much easier to read and understand it.

I have no idea if any of the story was based on fact, I believe not, but either way the story is written in such a believable way that it just could be. You can really feel the love, terror, and desperation of the characters. Not least Kaahi and Jai, when the are separated by the division of South and North India.

Underlying all this, is a love story between Kaahi and Jai which would make any heart melt. Over all a great little book well worth reading. Enjoy.

E.V. & Rome

E.V. & Rome - Giorgina Liguori Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a teenager today? Or more likely, do you have a teenager that you just can’t understand? Well help is here with Giorgina’s E.V. & Rome. This is a short but well written account of a young guy and a young girl, throughout a year. The book tells us all about the trials and tribulations they face, and help us to understand the thought processes they go through while trying to assimilate all the new feelings they have.

Written in a diary style, alternating chapters between E.V. and her counterpart Rome. Although this does lead to some repetition, in this case, that is good as we see how each of them reacts in similar situations. As oldies (well me anyway) we can get an idea of how to help and support them.

This book is fictional but the Author informs us early on that every thing included really did happen. So it leads me to wonder, is E.V. the author? and who was Rome?

The Garden of Earthly Delights

The Garden of Earthly Delights - Robert Dodds I really don’t know what to say about this book as I found it difficult to connect with the story and the characters.

I think the history had been well written and researched, but I found the writing to ‘heavy’. Please don’t ask what I mean by that, I don’t really know.
It’s not often I get a book that leaves me this flummoxed.

However, I did feel the characters to be well written and believable – at least to the point I can understand it.

The bottom line is that this book needs time to be read and appreciated to the full. It isn’t a book you will read and understand in just a day or two. The story is good and well worth making the effort to read, as I will be doing again at a later date.

The Siren's Realm

The Siren's Realm - Megan O'Russell Sadly I haven't had the pleasure of reading The Tethering, but I think I picked up the story easily enough in The Siren's Realm. Due to this, I had no idea how they where tethered, other than a rescue attempt, this did take me a little while to figure out. I believe this does stand alone extremely well, but is even better after reading the first book - I guess.

The story is well told, and at a very steady pace, neither too fast or slow. And the characters, are well thought out and developed. Sadly though I didn't really find the story line believable. Or Jacob come to that! Two teenagers, alone, tethered together, and only platonic? Come on we all know there is almost zero chance of that ever happening. Maybe I few might but it isn't the norm by a long shot.

Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to book 3.

Fighting for Keeps (A Brookhollow Story)

Fighting for Keeps (A Brookhollow Story) - Jennifer Snow This is the 5th in Jennifer’s Brookhollow series, and sadly I have not yet had the privilege of reading books 1 to 4. This didn’t cause me any real problems as Fighting for Keeps could just as easily be a stand alone romance. The story can seem a little far fetched and sickly if not written well, this one is written exceptionally well. I could easily imagine a MBA boxer giving up his career for the love of a good woman and her adopted children. Noah is really just a soft hearted sweetie beneath all the brawn.

Lindsay is very well described, her feelings and emotions are easy to believe, who of us would cope with not only bereavement but suddenly becoming mum to such young children, and not just one or two, but FIVE! I know I could never have survived such an ordeal. Lindsay does, ok with one or two mistakes I had to laugh at, but she manages.

Overall, a great little read, good for anyone really. Enjoy.
